Dental Root Inlays

A stable and long-lasting solution for restoring severely damaged teeth

Dental root inlays are an effective solution when a tooth has lost a significant portion of its natural tissue and requires a stable base for its further restoration. They help not only restore the functionality of the tooth, but also ensure the long-term service life of the dental crown or bridge. This solution is especially suitable in cases where traditional fillings or other restoration methods are not effective enough.

Why choose Dental Art?

Our clinic provides a full range of dental restoration services, including the placement of root inlays, using the clinic’s technical laboratory. This allows us to create extremely precise and individually tailored inlays that meet the needs of patients. Our experienced specialists use modern technologies and the highest quality materials to achieve both aesthetically attractive and functionally excellent results.

What to know before the procedure

Before starting treatment, make sure you have informed your dentist about all allergies and medications you are taking to avoid possible complications.

Before installing a root canal inlay, a thorough diagnosis of the tooth and endodontic treatment (cleaning of the canals) are performed. You will have the opportunity to choose between cast metal inlays and zirconia inlays. Cast inlays are more durable but less aesthetic, while zirconia inlays are an excellent solution for restoring front teeth, as they provide a more natural look.

The procedure usually takes place in two stages: preparation and fabrication of the inlay in the laboratory, followed by installation of the inlay. In total, this can take 1-2 weeks.

What happens during the procedure

After a thorough diagnosis of the tooth and prior endodontic treatment, the inlay is placed in the following sequential steps:

  • The dentist removes part of the endodontically filled canal filling to prepare the space for the inlay. An impression of the tooth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory, and the tooth opening is temporarily filled with a temporary filling.
  • In the laboratory, an accurate root inlay is made of metal or zirconium, depending on the selected material and the location of the tooth to be restored.
  • The finished inlay is placed in the root of the tooth and secured with high-quality cement, creating a stable foundation for further tooth restoration.
  • Once the inlay is securely secured, a dental crown or bridge is placed on it, fully restoring the functionality and natural appearance of the tooth.

Recommendations and aftercare

  • Slight sensitivity or discomfort around the treated area may occur after the procedure. If necessary, painkillers recommended by the dentist can be used to reduce discomfort.
  • We recommend avoiding extremely hot and cold foods or drinks on the day of the procedure. Also avoid very hard foods for the first few weeks after the procedure to allow the inlay to fully set.
  • Brush and floss your teeth regularly, paying special attention to the treated tooth, to prevent bacterial buildup and extend the life of the inlay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are root canal inlays?

Root canal inlays are specially designed restorations that are placed in the root of a tooth to provide a stable foundation for the restoration of a damaged tooth with a crown or bridge. They are suitable for severely damaged teeth, when the volume of tooth tissue has been significantly reduced.

When are root canal inlays needed?

Inlays are needed when more than 70% of the tooth’s natural tissue has been lost, for example due to deep caries, tooth erosion or trauma. They are an essential step before the installation of crowns or bridges.

How is root canal inlays installed?

The procedure involves cleaning the canals, taking an impression, making a custom inlay in a laboratory and placing it in the root, followed by cementation. The tooth is then completely restored with a crown or bridge.

How long do root canal inlays last?

Properly placed and carefully cared for inlays can last up to 10 years or more, if regular oral hygiene and preventive dental visits are followed.

Are root canal inlays a better alternative to fillings?

Yes, in cases of severely damaged teeth, inlays are significantly more effective than fillings, as they provide a stronger and more stable base, as well as better preserving the tooth structure in the long term.

Will my insurance policy cover the costs of the visit?

Depending on the terms of your insurance policy, the costs of root canal inlays may be partially or fully covered. Present your policy to our administrators during your visit, and they will provide you with all the necessary information.
