What to Know Before the Procedure
Thorough oral hygiene at home is a critical step in preparing your gums for treatment. During the visit, it is important to inform the periodontist about your health conditions, chronic illnesses, medications you are taking, or allergies. Otherwise, no special preparation is required before the appointment.
What Happens During the Procedure
Periodontal treatment typically involves a detailed examination of the teeth and gums and performing X-ray diagnostics.
- If the patient’s teeth are sensitive, the periodontist may administer surface anesthesia to reduce gum sensitivity before the procedure.
- Depending on the patient’s needs, the periodontist may perform various procedures, such as deep scaling and root planning (deep curettage), surgical periodontal treatment, surgical gum pocket reduction, or gum contouring.
Recommendations & Follow-Up Care
After periodontal treatment, maintaining strict oral hygiene is crucial to prevent further infections. Patients who undergo deep scaling and root planning should visit a dental hygienist regularly, at least once every three months, for professional teeth cleaning.
